4.Venue History

Majestically nestled in National Trust woodland in Hertfordshire’s rolling Chiltern Hills, and surrounded by 190 acres of stunning gardens, Ashridge House is the proverbial jewel in the Estate’s crown.

The grandeur of this Grade 1 listed country mansion is undeniable, but the house also has a softer, more playful side than its turreted façade might lead you to believe.

Originally built as a Benedictine monastery in 1283, it later became a favoured hunting lodge for King Henry VIII and a residence for his children after the Dissolution. At one time, Prince Edward, Princess Mary and Princess Elizabeth were all at the house together— quite the gathering of future kings and queens of England.

The Egerton family then owned the house from 1604 until after World War I when it became a wartime hospital. Subsequently, it housed The Bonar Law College and later, the Ashridge Management College in 1959.

The private Grade II registered historic gardens are begging to be explored. Humphry Repton, the greatest landscape gardener of his day, was commissioned to design the formal gardens, and they remain intact today as the finest surviving example of his work, often referred to as his ‘Garden of Gardens.’

Hosting lavish parties since its establishment in 1814, the house has welcomed British and foreign royalty, prime ministers, and renowned writers and artists. In more recent years, it became the inspiration for the Harry Potter novels and films, alongside being showcased in some famous music videos including Sam Smith's - 'I am not here to make friends'.

It’s safe to say Ashridge House know how to host an event!
